You Know You’ve Been Occupied By Soviets Too Long When . . .

You know you’ve been occupied by Soviets too long when you build a concrete camping. Unbelievable.

This is Vilnius City camping. If it looks more like a car park, that’s because it is - sectioned off from the vast parking area for Lit Expo.

With no shade or shelter, it’s kind of hostile at most times. Any lightweight, camping-quality plastic cup or plate is quickly windswept next door into Latvia.

There is a token grass shelf at the back - behind Exhibition Hall 5 - for a few tightly-packed backpacker tents, though if you are self-conscious about snoring it’s probably not for you.

In their defence, Lithuanians tend to associate camping only with motorhomes. Real campers have yet to penetrate deep into much of Eastern Europe, while Lithuanians themselves don’t seem to have fully recovered from the old restrictions on travel.

Although there are many spacious car parks closer to the town centre, Vilnius City Camping is certainly good for a luxe portakabin shower and a shave and from here you can admire some classic Soviet skyline pollution on the surrounding hills, including the TV tower.

Vilnius Camping Reception. The empty shelves in the drinks dispenser are another nice Soviet touch.
