The Seven Wonders Of Novgorod
The disclaimer that goes with this is that there might not be exactly, you know, a whole seven. I could be scratching around for more than a couple. But this here - one of several Soviet war monuments around Novgorod, is a definite candidate.
It’s similar in concept to the cosmonaut monument at VDNK in Moscow: a shooting red star on a concrete vapour trail. It was funded by Brezhnev - who thought statues of any kind were cool - and also by public subscription. Novgorod was comprehensively trashed by Nazis in WW2, which is how the town centre came to be rebuilt by German POWs as a penance. In some streets you’d think you were in Berlin.
This area, however, couldn’t be more Soviet and local residents can sleep easy at night under the protective red stardust.

hey dude, this monument is COOL
such monuments are usual in russia, right… i saw few photos of different monuments of this type.
[...] Copydude posts pictures of a WWII memorial in Novgorod. [...]
That’s a really cool monument. I’ve never seen one built like that (with the “vapor trail” acting as support).
That is a beautiful monument. Thanks for sharing! I’ll have to make a note of this for a time when I’m able to travel there myself.
