St. Beatlesburg, Russia

There’s a cavern club in St. Petersburg called Liverpool. It’s a little shrine to the Beatles. The fab four even appear in stained glass windows, though to see them to advantage you’ll need to go during ‘business lunchtime’ when the sun gets down into the cellars.

The walls are plastered with ‘that takes you back’ pictures as well as actual plastercasts - handprints from other bands who have come along to pay and play tribute.

Live music is most nights. The original idea was to have Beatles sound-alikes and covers bands - but hmmm . . . they’re in short supply in Russia. The evening I pitched up it was an Irish country rock group who didn’t play even one Beatles tune. The Russian party at the next table seemed to enjoy it anyway and banged their spoons to Blue Moon of Kentucky. On October 9th, however, everyone dutifully celebrated John Lennon’s birthday. Shrines come with obligations.

For St Petersburg, the food and drink isn’t outrageous at all. In fact, with music and memorabilia thrown in it’s not a bad night out. Liverpool is a short walk up Nevsky from Moskovsky Voskal, turn right on Liteiny Prospekt and then right again.
