Can You Marry A Russian Woman If You Are Dead?
Good question. Many older men marry young Russians to save the girls from poverty. However, marrying a Russian Woman can in itself produce severe financial hardship for the husband.
One obvious way out is to wait until you are dead before such a marriage and, thanks to a Greek Newspaper, I can confirm that this is possible. The report reads:
‘An investigation has been launched into how a Russian Woman officially wed a Greek one day after the groom succumbed to a terminal disease.
The mayor of Hortiatis, near Thessaloniki, married the couple on February 21, 2003 but a week later, the groom’s relatives called the Town Hall and informed them that he had died 24 hours earlier, the Eleftheros Typos daily said.
The unnamed Russian reportedly met the man when he had already been diagnosed with a terminal illness, but within days they decided to marry and rushed to get a marriage license issued. However, the groom was admitted into the hospital soon afterward and died on February 20.
It appears, however, that he had asked a friend to step in on his behalf for the big day - which passed without a hitch.
This newspaper report was nicely and sensitively titled, ‘Groom’s Death Fails To Spoil Wedding’.

It’s not funny at all. Because it all is TRUE. It’s horrific. But for me it is the same as to laugh at and humiliate somebody with disfigured face. The inner pain and sufferings of such a person are already immence. I am Russian and I know that all that is written here is true. And I know even more than the author does…
