Lulu Unlimited. (LuLu Polnaya)
While renting an apartment on St Petersburg’s Mokhovaya Street, it wasn’t difficult to cross the road and discover Lulu’s Bar.
It’s Lulu’s Bar so she can do what she likes and does. She can’t really sing and the jokes - all double-entendre - are fairly unsubtle. But a bit of kabaret with your konyak is always welcome.
Lulu likes audience participation even if you don’t. It’s not a tourist haunt, so saying ‘me no speaky’ won’t spare you. Expect to be coerced into some risque repartee on her probing microphone or into one of Lulu’s party games. Such as? Well, dancing with your partner on a square of newspaper is one. Put a foot off the square and you’ll lose an item of clothing. Thankfully, this never gets beyond borderline. Well, the bar is next to Mokhovaya Church.
Some people are carried away by Lulu’s performances - mostly Lulu herself - while it can leave others cold. Like everything in Russia, it probably depends how much you’ve had to drink.
Lulu’s cabaret appearances are on Fridays and Saturdays. During the rest of the week, drinks are cheaper, lunch is reasonable and there’s still some interest afforded by the bizarre window displays of drinking Russian puppets.
