Hitting The Malls
Unusually upbeat article on Russia from the Toronto Star
Critics may warn of the erosion of political rights in Russia - but consumers just want to hit the malls.
Customers jostle and push, stuffing their carts with everything from Swedish furniture to Calvin Klein underwear. The stores – IKEA, Zara, Marks & Spencer – would be familiar to any Western shopper, although in Russia they tend to be twice the size of their counterparts in Europe or North America.’
Really interesting. I thought I better get out this weekend, grab some credit cards and go downtown Novgorod.

The Star continues:
Russia has seen eight straight years of economic growth, with expansion for 2006 estimated at 7 per cent, more than three times the rate in the European Union.
Salaries have been growing at a rate of more than 10 per cent a year and consumption is estimated to have risen by 12.5 per cent last year.
A flat income tax rate of 13 per cent and remnants of the Soviet system, such as subsidized housing and utilities, also mean that Russians have far more disposable income than a typical Western consumer.
“Russia has one of the fastest-growing income and consumption rates in the world,” says Mikhail Terentiev, a consumer analyst at Moscow’s Troika Dialog investment bank. “People who could never afford to buy quality goods now can.”
Russians Relish The Freedom To Shop

This is wrong Novgorod, I guess. Move to Nizhniy for mall shopping expierience.

Right after working out my wedding date, I began to locate my best bridal gown. You can imagine how happy a bride to be could be in selecting her bridal dress for the big day. I went to some bridal shops nearby and as well checked on-line for my ideal gown. Soon after comparing the prices, I decided to order my bridal gown via the internet. I found quite a few shops on the web and ultimately I ordered my bridal gown from Shopofbrides. I was a little afraid with regards to purchasing such an essential dress from an online shop, but the customer service updated me on my gown and offered me the shipping No. immediately after shipping my bridal dress. A week ago, I received it, and it’s pretty attractive even more beautiful as compared with the pictures shown, and it fits me very well (although I ordered a standard size). The fabric, hand made beadwork and also the embroidery are all of good quality. At my wedding, every person was astonished at my wedding gown and ask me just where I bought such an incredible wedding gown. I do think they’d never believe my dress simply cost me $359.00 USD. In addition, Shopofbrides.com shipped the wedding veil to me as a gift which matched up my wedding dress very well. After my wedding, I recommended this magic site to a lot of my friends and also relatives. And I am certain that they could find their dream dress there without spending lots. This is in particular significant for those in a limited budget which I know a few of my unmarried friends pretty care about. A lot of people might think that buying online is not a wise idea given that a wedding gown truly means a lot to a bride-to-be, but from this experience of shopping for my cheap wedding gown from Shopofbrides, I believe that it is not as awful as others think. The only factor we require when trying to find our bridal gowns on-line is that we need to find a trustworthy online store. And I am lucky that I found it, and I truly thank Shopofbrides aiding me look my best on my special day and make my wedding more wonderful.
