I Never Did Like The Bar At The Sport Hotel

Ever wondered what happens when you fill in those ‘customer safisfaction’ surveys? Well. Obviously enough people gave Moscow’s Sport Hotel a ‘could do better’ rating. It was dynamited the other day.

Coincidentally, this news happens while 9/11 skeptics are grabbing the headlines. Now everyone from eminent physicists to European diplomats believe that the World Trade Center was ‘control demolished‘.

Well, the Sport does look uncannily like WTC7 in free fall, don’t you think?
Controlled demolition means that buildings collapse neatly into their own footprint at free fall speeds. So neatly and precisely, that there’s no need to even warn the neighbours that the huge concrete block next door is about to implode.

This is what happens with Russian hotels. One day they are part of the skyline. Next day gone. Just like the Twin Towers. And they didn’t bother to inform the neighbours of the Sport Hotel either.

Irony. Americans now believe that the fall of the WTC was the result of controlled demolition. While Russians living near to the control demolished hotel suspect a terrorist attack.

Next hotel to bite the cement dust is Moscow’s Rossiya Hotel. But this one is being torn down discreetly, piece by piece. A hideous piece of architecture without doubt, but a lot of people – particularly budget travellers to Moscow – will miss it.
